A brief preface introduces the reader to the milieu and circumstances that Proctor epitomized and mentions a few things about the author of passing but little import. Chapter 1 is a brief prefatory biography of Proctor’s life prior to teaching and echoes the short description of this book. Chapter 2 is essentially opening day of school and how Proctor goes about instilling respect for the purpose of education and the required respect for Proctor himself. Bible teaching was still very much current back in those days, and Proctor quotes liberally from that work. Chapter 3 continues Proctor’s biography after his retirement, his marriage, travels, works, death and burial. An afterward explains the meaning of the story title and why Proctor suggested it to the school committee. Mt. Ebal was the mountain of curses, opposite that of Mt. Gerizim and blessings. By analogy, education was the blessing, and punishment for sloth, bad comportment the essential justification for Mt. Ebal.
